  1. These islands were ruled by Moslem sultans until the French took control
  2. from 1841-1909.  France gave the islands the option of independence.  In 1975
  3. the Comoro Chamber of Deputies declared its independence.  However, in 1976
  4. Mayotte voted to remain French.  A leftist group that had gained control in
  5. 1985 was ousted in 1978 in a French coup.
